Roots Sudan - YEI, South Sudan (CDD)
Roots Sudan is a small charity created in 2008 after an initial trip to southern Sudan (before it became the separate country of South Sudan). Their main focus since they began has been helping children in South Sudan to get a better education. As a charity, as is often the case with the projects LYT supports, they have no paid staff, premises or other overheads, so that every penny they raise goes to fund projects in and for the schools they support.
For the last few years, Roots Sudan have been supporting the growth of a primary school in the town of Yei, South Sudan by partnering with another small charity set up by the founder of that school. Recent projects that they have funded have included the installation of a new perimeter fence for the school, the building of new toilet blocks, and the building and equipping of a coffee/stationery shop. This shop, run by parents and the school, enables a level of sustainability, as all profits are passed to the school.
They are now looking to raise funds for the building of some new classrooms to enable the school to become a full primary school - which will be an amazing achievement as just a few years ago, after the civil war, they were simply a kindergarten. In South Sudan there are 8 years of primary schooling, usually ages 6-13, so this is a significant project. Work has now begun on the development of the new classrooms as the funds are in place to start this work, and they were keen to begin work.
Their task now is to find the remainder of the funds in order to complete the buildings and equip them with furniture and resources. Consequently, LYT were happy to learn of Roots Sudan, and to offer them a CDD of £5,000 toward this fantastic project. We can’t wait to share their future updates with you all, and to see how the new classes develop.
